The Wedding Expo

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I had a stall at my first every wedding expo last weekend. I didn’t really know what to expect so I think I probably over prepared.

I took lots of mud cake samples as well - chocolate, white chocolate, white chocolate/lemon/coconut (yummy) and jaffa. My big winner were the cupcakes of course. Everyone loves cupcakes.

I was running out of time the day before so I quickly did this bow on top of the cutting cake. Thank goodness for Planet Cake their great ideas!!

How gorgeous are these white paper cases for cupcakes. I think they are just beautiful.

The black ones are really lovely and so delicate.

Wedding cookie favours

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

I have decided to have a stall at a little wedding expo that is being held here in July.  It’s still a way off but I have started to get some things together.

This is my first one which I gave as a thank you to someone I recently did a wedding cake for. I really like the black and white - its very striking. My favourite is the next black and white wedding/bridesmaid dress.

I’m trying to get some interesting flavours for decorated cookies. Most people seem to go with vanilla sugar or gingerbread. I have to admit that is mainly what I do. I’m thinking of trying lime and poppy seed, orange and cardamon, vanilla and mint…love to know any other ideas, there has to be more than vanilla and gingerbread out there.

Having said that though, the vast majority of my orders are for vanilla sugar cookies with vanilla icing. But maybe I can come up with something tempting.

And of course, what’s a wedding without a pink bridesmaid’s dress.

Garden cupcakes

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

I have just finished a batch of vanilla cupcakes for a morning tea with friends. It’s beautiful weather here so I thought a flower theme would be nice. I love little cupcake roses and I do them whenever I can.

These ones of course are everyone’s favourite. My favourite are the little blue ones next. They are made with melted fondant icing which is really yummy. At least I think so.

Too many to choose from. So much for my diet (or anybody else’s in fact).

This is totally unrelated to garden cupcakes but as I was flicking through different sites, I came across the cutest cupcake topper - a retro baby - from cupcakeswirl.com

Wouldn’t you just love to put that baby on top of a cake! I haven’t seen them out here but when I do!!!!

a rosey wedding

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

My client wanted a wedding cake with white and pink roses all the way down one side.  Its a combination of white chocolate mud cake and caramel mud cake.

I had some caramel mud cake left over and have eaten so much of it. Terrible. I really have no will power. I spent the week finishing off filler flowers, roses and leaves. This is the side view. I think its quite pretty.

The final cake is very traditional I think and lovely. The bride told me exactly what she wanted. I think she has lovely taste.

Ballerina cake

Monday, April 6th, 2009

I loved making this cake, especially the little ballerina!. It’s a first birthday cake. You can’t tell from this photo but she has sparkles in her hair and sprinkled over her tutu. The cake is vanilla buttercake layered with buttercream - pink of course.

I had some trouble though working out how to do ballet shoes. I think they might be a bit big but hopefully a one year old won’t notice.

Bride and Groom figurines

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

These are my first real attempts at bride and groom sugar figurines. It took me a really long time to get the bride’s shape right. In fact, it took me longer than it did to make the cake. I was happy with them in the end. I had to travel with them for a couple of hours and was terrified the whole time that they would break! But, they both made it safely to the wedding.

I didn’t even get a proper photo of the cake. This is it still in the box I transported it in. Not yet at the wedding venue.

What a long weekend!

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

I spent the Australia Day long weekend cooking 150 cupcakes for a wedding. I was feeling pretty daunted before the task but, with the help of my mother-in-law Joan, we got 13 dozen white chocolate cupcakes cooked (with a few left over for us to eat - of course). I used the white chocolate cupcake recipe from the Crabapple Bakery Cupcake Cookbook which is pretty good.  I didn’t do it this time but I usually add frozen rasberries - it is delicious. The Crabapple Bakery’s carrot cupcake recipe is really really good.

Despite my weekend of cooking and eating cupcakes, I did a two tier cake for a friend’s granddaughters birthday. The cake needed to be delivered to an isolated property near Bateman’s Bay. As I was busy cooking cupcakes, Anthony did the delivery for me. It was supposed to be buttercream but it was so hot - nearly 40 degrees on Saturday, so I played it safe and used fondant.

Hopefully the birthday girl was happy with it.

More Bikkies

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Oh I haven’t posted anything for a really long time for which I apologise. I have been really really busy since before Christmas. What with end of year concerts, enrollments in kindy, lots of baking, Christmas preparations, I haven’t had time for much else.

I didn’t even organise Christmas cards for Lily’s preschool friends. How terrible. I made these Christmas cookies for a customer whose daughter was giving them to all her classmates. What a nice idea.

I am going to do them for my kids next Christmas (that is, if I can remember).

Not everything I have done has been Christmas though. There are a lot of birthdays around Christmas time. I made these prams for a first birthday.

These are my favourites though! Green dinasours on sticks - what a great birthday party that would have been.

The Big Red Car

Monday, October 27th, 2008

This was my first attempt at a Wiggles birthday cake - the Big Red Car. It was great fun to do. Of course, I did forget a few things, especially Murray’s nose! My daughter spotted that one.

Happy Birthday Little Pirate

Monday, October 13th, 2008

It’s Ben’s birthday. He is only three and couldn’t decide on what cake he wanted. So we went with a pirate. This one is based on a skull and crossbones in one of Debbie Brown’s books. Her cakes are really fantastic - she is so creative. I did a course with her a few months ago and she was just inspiring and clever.
